What Agarwood really is?

Agarwood or known as Gaharu (in Malay) belongs to the Aquilaria species and in Malaysia. It is a unique type of plantation whereby it requires the trunk to be infected by mold in order to produce a dark resin with a strong aromatic smell. This dark aromatic smell can command a global market price of USD 6,000 – USD 12,000 per kg and according to some statistics, the price is doubled up when it reaches Saudi Arabia – the main importer country for Agarwood products.
Imagine having a tree that requires it to be stresses, diseased, and malformed instead of having healthy, luxuriant ones. Doesn’t it weird? Well, that is all Agarwood is all about. As the matter of fact, most Malaysian still do not know the existence of Agarwood even if they do, they probably do not know what this plantation is all about. To make the explanation simple in this article, just imagine, you have to make this tree sick by either damaging its skin or even drill a hole in it so that mold will infect its trunk and then, as the infection progress, the tree produces a dark aromatic resin – very dense, dark, resin – embedded heartwood.
However, in the commercial market, there are two main segments of Agarwood trees are traded. First is the wild Agarwood and second is the commercial agarwood which is cultivated Agarwood. Wild agarwood comes with an extremely high price, but, its populations in the wild is getting extinct plus it is protected tree species by CITES (the convention on international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora). Therefore, cultivated Agarwood has become a substitute for it.
Dadvance Agarwood Solutions Sdn. Bhd. is on its track to produce quality cultivated Agarwood products and also to become the largest supplier in Malaysia within 3 years. Our result is proven with almost 80% – 90% of resin formation after one and a half year of inoculation. Before we forgot, inoculation is a process where we injected a serum into the trunk in order for the tree to be infected. The serum is very important because, from serum, the dark resinous resin’s quality is depending on the serum quality you use.
